Weather Synopsis

We're in a rinse and repeat pattern over the short term with upper level ridging offshore battling with the storm track and jet stream pointed into northern British Columbia. For tonight through Tuesday night, we'll see periods of high clouds slipping under the ridge. Forecast models have not been particularly useful with fine-tuning the timing of the higher clouds, so a broad brush of partly to mostly cloudy has been applied to all zones except into Oregon where clearer conditions are more likely. Sunny skies are more likely on Wednesday as the upper level ridge shifts inland along the West Coast.

We'll see a slow warming trend over the short term as well. Despite the high freezing levels, mountain temperatures will once again hew close to the freezing mark on Tuesday, with temperatures mainly in the 30s and low 40s, and then warm a few more degrees on Wednesday with the aforementioned sunnier skies.  Near Stevens Pass and along the east slopes of the Cascades, low level inversions will keep chilly temperatures below 5500' or so, especially during the night-time.

Finally, moderate NW ridgeline winds with even stronger winds in the alpine will continue through Tuesday night before finally backing off on Wednesday.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A fast moving frontal system will have a moment and break the ridge's hold over the area on Thursday.  Unfortunately, this weather system will pack more wind than snow.  Currently, we're looking at 1-3 inches for the central and northern Cascades, less for the south WA Cascades, and almost nothing further east of the Cascade crest and down near Mt Hood.  We can expect strong westerly winds with this system Thursday along with a sharp cooling trend later in the day and Thursday night.  We'll see colder, windy conditions on Friday with a few leftover showers.  The upper level ridge returns over the weekend and looks like it could stick around for quite awhile.

Previous forecast from Jan 13, 2025

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
