Weather Synopsis

An exceptionally deep low pressure system positioned well offshore will bring windy conditions and locally heavy snowfall our mountains tonight through Wednesday morning. Warm frontal precipitation will lift from SW to NE tonight over the area. The heaviest precipitation will occur along the east slopes of the Cascades (and Olympics) thanks to some upsloping and closer to the Washington/Oregon border where the axis of heaviest precipitation will be aimed. Portions of the east slopes of the Cascades south of I-90 and near Mt Hood may exceed 1' of snow overnight. Precipitation will be lighter in the Passes and northwest and northcentral Cascades.  The cold front will stall along the Olympics and weaken as it washes out during the day.  The heaviest showers will linger over the Olympic peninsula with lighter showers elsewhere.

The wind will be the other major story with strong to extreme winds in many areas starting late this afternoon through Wednesday morning.  E-SE winds will be the strongest near and west of the Cascade crest with those extreme southeasterlies reaching into the western Cascade foothills. Even for areas that aren't receiving heavy snow, the combination of snow and winds will severely impact visibility.

We'll be inbetween the stronger jet stream over northern CA and the upper low still positioned a bit farther offshore Wednesday night and Thursday.  We won't completely dry out but showers and winds will be much lighter.  Snow levels will moderate a bit on Thursday as well into the 3000-4000' range.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Another frontal system will approach form the south Thursday night and Friday.  This system could be messing with a warming trend leading to mixed precipitation types (freezing rain) for the Passes and the central/south WA Cascades, or it could just be a milder storm with snow levels pushing above 5-7000'.  A more low key and light showery pattern looks likely for Saturday with snow levels pegged between 3000-4000'.

Previous forecast from Nov 18, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
