A cool, unsettled, and mostly cloudy weather pattern refreshes the snow surfaces through the weekend. Light rain and snow will drift into the northern Cascades from central Washington Friday afternoon and evening as weak surface low drifts westward. Mid-level moisture continues to arrive from the east while low-level moisture drives showers from the west, creating an unusual interplay. We're not exactly sure which side of the northern Cascades will receive the most snow, but totals should be in the 1-3" range Friday night. A period of elevated ridgeline winds peaks Friday night, focusing moderate winds and strong gusts on the east slopes of the Cascades, the mountain gaps, and Mt Hood. This should wring out precipitation amounts approaching 0.25" along the west slopes of the volcanoes while other areas pick up less.
Expect a short-lived break in the action early Saturday morning as the broad upper low over the western U.S. exits. An approaching shortwave trough returns increasing light rain and snow showers to the west slopes of the Cascades. Precipitation arrives from SW to NE, peaking in the afternoon through overnight hours and delivering locally moderate amounts of precipitation to the SW Washington Cascades, Mt Hood, and areas from Snoqualmie Pass impacted by a moderate convergence band drifts northward Saturday night. Mostly light rain and showers linger through Sunday. Elevations above 3500 ft can expect 2-6” of snow through the weekend, with snow levels dropping to 2000-2500 ft each night. Further east expect less snow, more sun breaks, and a gradual warming trend with freezing levels rising to 5000 ft by Sunday afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A broad ridge offshore gradually decreases shower activity Sunday night as it pushes into the region. The ridge flattens on Monday as a frontal system impacting British Columbia drops southward. Although the frontal system weakens, it should bring some light to moderate rain or snow from Snoqualmie Pass northward through Tuesday. Our region will be on the warm side of the system, so expect snow levels to rise 1000-1500 ft relative to the weekend.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
