Rounds of increasing moisture continue to impact the Pacific Northwest as a weakening cutoff low ejects northward along the Pacific Northwest coastline through Tuesday evening. The SSW upper-level flow associated with this weather pattern has largely been splitting the Cascades as bands of showers increase across the region.
Banded precipitation should increase Monday night with the low passing off the Oregon Coast. Bands may have locally heavier precipitation, but any such precipitation would be short-lived. Light to moderate ridgeline winds increase and moderate low-level E flow below 4500 ft increases through the night. This increasing E flow combined with subtle upper-level cooling should enable precipitation that initially starts as mixed precipitation in the central Cascade passes to most likely turn over to snow at times. The wintry precipitation should continue for the east slopes and pass through Tuesday morning before a transition to rain and freezing rain everywhere except the Methow Valley and Washington Pass. The system ends warm in most areas. Rain and high-elevation snow predominate west of the Cascade Crest with snow levels generally above 5500 ft.
The steadiest precipitation arrives Tuesday morning with a round of moderate SSW winds that focus locally heavy precipitation on Mt St Helens, Mt Adams, and Mt Rainier before the band lifts into the northern Cascades and activity becomes drippy or showery further south. Showers linger in the northern Cascades Tuesday night on a continued SW flow but gradually trail off. A new cutoff low moves into position off of California's coast, resulting in fair weather and very light winds over the region on Wednesday. Freezing levels rise to around 5500-8500 ft across the region with light to moderate E flow keeping the passes cool.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Our first real winter storm in quite some time arrives just before the weekend. Wednesday night through Thursday, expect fair weather with mild temperatures. Very light W winds gradually shift toward the SW as a frontal system with the warm frontal precipitation north of the Canadian Border as the cold front approaches from the west. The sharp cold front arrives sometime Friday or Friday evening with a brief period of strong southerly winds followed by a shift to W flow and post-frontal snowfall.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
