Weather Synopsis

We've had rougly a week of dry conditions here in the PNW but that's about to change starting on Thursday and then becoming increasingly stormy through the weekend. We had a bit of a surprise push of low/mid level clouds push inland Tuesday night and Wednesday, obscuring all but the highest peaks and the north Cascades. These clouds were out ahead of a weak frontal system that's offshore.  That frontal system will push inland on Thursday and fall apart as it does. A trace to few inches of snow will accumulate through sunset Thursday across our mountains. A few light snow showers will continue Thursday night.

A relatively stronger frontal system will arrive Friday, affecting the central/south Cascades and especially the Mt Hood area with a more moderate helping of snow.  Storm totals for the Olympics and west slopes of the Cascades are likely to be 6-12" from Thursday through Friday afternoon, 2-8" along the east slopes, and 1-2ft the southern WA volcanoes and Mt Hood.  Westerly ridgeline winds for the southern Washington Cascades and Mt Hood area will also become strong during the day on Friday. Snow levels will creep up a bit on Friday but we should see all snow at major trailheads as snow levels stay near or below 3000'.

Extended Weather Synopsis

On Friday night we'll see another frontal system, this one packing even more of punch through Saturday morning with slightly higher snowfall totals.  A low pressure system curling towards the cental B.C. coast Saturday night and Sunday will bring the final punch through the weekend. However, the storm track promises to bring milder air into the region. The Olympics, Mt Hood and west slopes of the Cascades will see rising snow levels and at transition to rain at lower/mid elevations late Saturday night and Sunday. It's less clear how long the Cascades Passes and east slopes of the Cascades can hang onto snow before warming up on Sunday. Either way, it promises to be a fast-paced, wet and stormy weekend.

Previous forecast from Nov 28, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
