Weather Synopsis

A compact low formed along the subtropical feed of moisture and approaches the region Sunday night. The front stalled over northern Oregon on Sunday lifts back northward as a fairly strong warm front, spreading a band of moderate rain and snow along with sharply increasing temperatures back into Washington State. WSW winds across the region will increase into the strong range in the alpine, but low-level winds through the mountain gaps should shift easterly Sunday evening through noon on Monday. Without much cold air to work with, expect Snoqualmie Pass to start as a rain/snow mix before warmer air aloft overwhelms the cooler easterly flow. Stevens Pass may pick up 2-3 inches of snow before changing to rain.

The significant snowfall will occur on the colder northern and western flanks of the low as it tracks E to W across the Olympic mountains and the central Cascades on Monday. Models show general agreement for heavy snowfall throughout the North Cascades from late Sunday night through mid-day Monday with the band pivoting to a N-S behind a strong cold front passing early Monday afternoon and re-orientating precipitation to focus on the entire W slopes of the Cascades. The strong front should bring in significantly colder on a W or WNW flow. A major upslope snowfall event is also likely the northern Olympic Mountains, where the track of the low sucks colder air from the north up the slopes of the Olympics. The setup has the potential to bring snow down to sea-level, while the southern portions of the Olympics may see concurrent 5000-6000 ft snow levels before cooler air works in behind the front. In the warmer dry sector, expect significantly lighter precipitation, elevated snow levels and very strong alpine winds.

Flow switches NW and remains strong Monday night. Snow shower activity decreases Monday night from the moderate range in the evening to the light range overnight. Some banded showers may be locally intense with snow levels dropping well below pass level by midnight.

Snow forecast amounts are tricky with this system. From late Sunday night through Monday night we expect 15-20" for Washington Pass and Hurricane Ridge, 12-18" for Mt Baker, 6-10" for Stevens Pass, and 3-6" for Snoqualmie Pass (mostly after the rain event).

On Tuesday, very light snow showers will linger in a few areas, but most areas will start to see some partly cloudy skies.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A high pressure moving into the region from the west should help clear skies Tuesday night and temperatures should be cold throughout the region with 1000-2500 ft freezing levels. On Wednesday, the ridge axis moves over the region late in the day. Expect a mostly sunny conditions with significant warming west of the Cascade Crest while a cold pool strengthens east of the Cascade Crest. Light low-level E flow develops and ushers cold air through the mountain gaps. This low-level flow increases into the moderate range Wednesday night through Thursday with the ridge continuing to dominate our weather, but shifting east. The next system is slated to arrive on Friay.

Previous forecast from Dec 20, 2020

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
