We're in for intense and wet weather in the short term. Following Friday's warm frontal rain/snow band, a cold front will bring moderate to heavy rain and snow across the region along with strong ridgecrest winds during the evening hours. Snow levels bump up to 4000 ft over Washington State and 5000 ft for Mt Hood. Overnight, the light to moderate snow showers should quickly taper in most areas, but persist longer in anticipated well-defined convergence that is likely to impact Stevens Pass and the Mountain Loop. On Saturday, as westerly flow keeps light rain and snow showers over the Cascades west slopes, snow levels lower to 2500-3000 ft across Northern Washington, but areas further south will experience limited cooling.
Saturday night's system taps dreaded subtropical moisture as a low tracking towards central British Columbia and brings that moisture into our region on a strong jetstream from late Saturday through Sunday. The front moves through northern Washington more quickly, dropping 2-4" of water equivalent by Sunday evening from Snoqualmie Pass northward. Paradise and Mt. Hood can expect 4-5" of water equivalent as the front stalls. Uncertainty remains regarding how quickly the front drops south, cutting off the moisture feed to areas further north. Snow levels should rise quickly Saturday night and peak in the 4500-8000 ft range (lowest in the north) before dropping back to 3000-4500 ft over Washington State as the northern areas dry out on Sunday. Snow levels at Mt Hood remain elevated in the 7000 ft range.

Extended Weather Synopsis
One final strong storm tracks NE off our coast Sunday night, sending more moderate rain and higher elevation snow back northward, followed by heavier rain and high elevation snow Monday. A strong cold front passing late Monday should bring rapid cooling and a good shot of snowfall on NW flow down to Snoqualmie Pass level Monday night. High pressure is expected for the rest of the week.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
