Weather Synopsis

The upcoming weekend features spring weather at its finest, with warming temperatures trending well above seasonal norms, mostly light winds, with plenty of sunshine alongside some thin high clouds. Friday afternoon begins with temperatures typical mid-April temperatures as a warm ridge rides over a preexisting colder air mass.

The remainder of the weekend will be shaped by the interplay between a broad offshore low-pressure system and the ridge over our region. A thin, more widespread high cloud deck arrives Friday night and results in filtered sunshine at times through the weekend. Some low clouds are likely to move into the Olympics and the west slopes of the Cascades later Saturday into the evening hours before retreating. 5000 ft temperatures drop into the low 30s in most areas to start the weekend. Light SSE ridgeline winds resulting from the circulation will transport milder air from the south, with freezing levels rising to around 7000 ft in the north and near 9000 ft around Mt. Hood by Saturday afternoon.

The offshore low shifts southward Saturday night into Sunday. Ridgeline winds turn more easterly and may increase over the southern half of the forecast area peaking late Saturday night into Sunday morning. These quickly, becoming light and variable by the end of the day as freezing levels climb to 9,500-10,000 ft. Upper-level divergence could help touch off an isolated rain shower over the Olympics late in the day.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Sunday night and Monday feature quiet weather with a split flow pattern and light winds aloft. This is likely to be the warmest day of the dry spell for most areas with freezing levels pushing 10500 ft across the region. The aforementioned offshore low drifts towards the northern California coastline Monday night into Tuesday, extending moisture and instability back into the region along with a gradual cooling trend. Expect shower activity starting early in the day around Mt Hood, then moving as far north as the central Washington Cascades during the afternoon.

Previous forecast from Apr 17, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
