It's a warm April 10th in the Pacific Northwest, with temperatures at 5,000 ft ranging from the mid-40s to the low 50s. A weak trough off the California coast directs bands of clouds and isolated areas of embedded precipitation into the region on light SSE flow. The first, more significant, precipitation band currently lies near the Washington/Oregon border. This will occasionally moderate precipitation to Mt Hood during the evening hours, the southern Washington volcanoes overnight, and the remainder of the Washington Cascades and Olympics on Saturday. Snow levels start around 7,000 ft, but lower to around 5,000-6,000 ft Saturday through the weekend. Unfortunately, major trailheads will receive rain, but most upper-elevation locations can expect up to 4 inches of snow, with 6 inches possible on the southern Cascade volcanoes and on the highest peaks of the Olympics. Increasing light westerly ridgeline winds will favor the west slopes of the Cascades for the highest precipitation totals.
A stronger low approaches Northern California later in the weekend, maintaining the upper-level split flow pattern. Moisture lingers along the northern and southern peripheries of the forecast region Saturday night, clearing out in the north Sunday morning. This increases the chance for partial sunshine on Sunday morning north of Highway 12. Scattered light rain and higher-elevation snow showers build northward once again from Oregon, with low cloud cover also filling in from midday through the afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Periods of light rain and snow, with a high likelihood of convergence banding, will focus on the western slopes of the Cascades as temperatures gradually lower from Sunday night through Monday night. Of far more intrigue is a cold low-pressure system that slides down the coastline from the Gulf of Alaska. This translates into a more significant winter storm approaching on Tuesday, with light precipitation increasing in the morning and becoming moderate in the afternoon. Snow levels hover around 3000-3500 ft. Expect moderate to strong SW ridgeline winds in advance of the approaching cold front.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
