In the short term, the Pacific Northwest remains wedged between a northern branch of the jet stream directing moisture into northern British Columbia and a series of cutoff low-pressure systems gravitating towards northern California. The first of these low-pressure centers spins just off the northern California coast as of Thursday afternoon, with associated moisture moving into the Sierra Nevada and southern half of Oregon. A stronger cutoff low tracks toward the first low Thursday night through Friday. As this stronger low takes over, it pushes the lingering moisture from the first low northward. Initially, this translates to high clouds moving into our region on Thursday evening, gradually increasing overnight. By Friday, clouds lower and thicken through the morning hours, with a slight chance of a stray shower as an initial weak band of showers moves into drier air. Better chances for precipitation arrive late Friday afternoon around Hood as a more substantial rain band lifts northward over Mt Hood and then into Washington State Friday night.
Freezing levels generally range from 8000-10000 ft Thursday night through Friday, with the warmest temperatures in the southern portions of the Forecast area Friday afternoon. 5000 ft Temperatures will approach and could surpass 60F in areas of the West South Cascades favored by downsloping of light SE ridgeline winds.
As precipitation and moisture increase, temperatures gradually cool from south to north. Snow levels should drop to 6000-7000 ft Friday night, then hover around 6000-6500 ft. Ridgeline winds start the day light and variable, but gradually increase out of the WSW by the afternoon. Expect mostly cloudy skies Friday night through Saturday, with light rain and higher-elevation snow at times. The focus of precipitation gradually shifts from the E to the W slopes of the Cascades.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Snow levels continue to gradually lower Saturday night through Monday, returning temperatures to seasonal norms. Westerly ridgeline winds are expected to increase starting Sunday night as we transition toward a more active weather pattern in the middle of next week. The west winds will force some lifting and associated chances of very light precipitation focused on the west slopes of the Cascades throughout the extended forecast period.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
