Weather Synopsis

Through the remainder of the forecast season, afternoon mountain weather forecasts will be published at 2:30 PM.

After a warm and damp Saturday, the flattening offshore ridge opens the door for the arrival of a strong cold front from the NW. Light rain and snow gradually increase Saturday evening in the northern Cascades, becoming moderate to heavy overnight for Mt Baker and the Mountain Loop. Peak precipitation should occur from 4 AM to 10 AM on Sunday for the central Washington Cascades to Mt Rainier with 0.5-1" of water equivalent in a short 6-hour window. The cold front weakens as it moves into the southern Cascades during the afternoon, bringing mostly lighter precipitation as post-frontal snow showers develop over the central Washington Cascades. The timing of the rain/snow transition should occur around 4 AM for Mt Baker, 7 AM for Stevens Pass, and 1 PM for Snoqualmie at pass level, but mid-morning at middle elevations.

Moderate to locally strong W winds will continue to buffet our region, with a particular focus on areas near/east of the Cascade Crest. Expect winds to have more momentum than typical lows in the terrain through the mountain gaps. Moderate snow showers continue on low snow ratios Sunday night through Monday. Areas near and west of the Cascade Crest can expect 6-18" of snow, with 2-5" amounts likely further east. Higher snowfall rates are likely in convergence bands between Snoqualmie Pass and the Skagit.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Snow continues to stack up as a subtle trough keeps the air mass cool, moist, and unstable W flow. Moderate snow showers remain focused on areas near and west of the Cascade Crest, potentially becoming heavy at times Tuesday afternoon and overnight. A stronger system arrives with a warm front on Wednesday. Expect gradually rising snow levels, heavy snow (transitioning to rain at the lowest elevations), and strong winds. Expect 1-3 ft of snowfall in areas near and west of the Cascade Crest during the extended forecast.

Previous forecast from Mar 7, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
