Weather Synopsis

UPDATE 2:58 pm: Adjusted sensible weather.

A warm frontal system is pushing inland off the coast, with a southwest to northeast flow direction. Strong gusts have been recorded all along the west side of the Cascades. Mt Baker's weather station has picked up significantly more precipitation than the rest of the NWAC stations, with 1" of water since this morning, and gusts into the 40s MPH. Snow levels continue to hover around 5,000 feet.

Rain and mountain snow will increase along the Cascade Crest through Tuesday evening as moisture continues pressing inland. With this storm track, less precipitation is expected to spill over to the east side. Snow levels will gradually lower overnight into Wednesday, dropping to near 3,000 feet by Wednesday night.

By Wednesday, the flow direction shifts from SW to WNW and eventually NW. This transition favors increased precipitation along the passes and western Cascades, along with better potential for spillover east of the crest. A Puget Sound Convergence Zone may set up between Snoqualmie Pass and Stevens Pass on Wednesday afternoon, bringing locally heavier precipitation. Its exact positioning is still uncertain, and movement north or south will likely influence precipitation intensity between the passes. This shift in flow will also bring a change in wind direction and increasing wind speeds across the passes, the Mount Hood zone, and into the East Central zone.

Cooling continues into Thursday, with snow levels reaching below Snoqualmie Pass, but less moisture to work with for snow production.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Active weather will continue Thursday night into the weekend, with additional rounds of moisture and wind on tap. A relative lull may occur Thursday night into Friday, but precipitation is unlikely to shut off completely before the next, warmer system arrives. Snow levels are expected to rise more noticeably Friday night into Saturday, bringing a transition back toward higher elevation snow and lower elevation rain.

Previous forecast from Mar 3, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
