Weather Synopsis

It's another dry and mostly sunny day across the Pacific Northwest mountains, notable as most areas haven't seen a drop or a flurry in the last 12 days. Temperatures have warmed up from this morning's chilly start, and with slightly higher freezing levels and temperatures near and west of the Cascade crest. Persistent low-level easterly flow has pulled areas of low clouds up along portions of the east slopes of the Cascades into the Snoqualmie Pass area today, while sparing the higher Cascade mountain passes.

A weak upper-level trough will approach from the west and spread high and mid clouds over the region overnight. Cloud cover should be thickest Monday morning, and then start to break up a bit in the afternoon as the upper level feature passes into eastern WA.  This system is unlikely to bring measurable precipitation, but a few flurries can't be ruled out through Monday or Monday night.  A brief increase in westerly winds will temporarily mix the atmosphere Monday afternoon, leading to more uniform freezing levels (4000-6000') across the region.

Upper level ridging will rebuild offshore Monday night into Tuesday.  High clouds ahead of Pacific frontal system should begin to increase late Monday night into Tuesday.  Easterly flow will begin to increase Tuesday afternoon, and a starker west-east divide (cooler east-side) will return. The Passes will likely see a return to low clouds and breezy E-SE days during the day on Tuesday.  Look for S-SW winds to increase Tuesday afternoon over the Olympics and Mt Baker area ahead of the frontal system.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The frontal system weakens and splits on Tuesday night and Wednesday, likely bringing some light new snow to the Olympics and northwest Cascades.  Currently it's unclear how much moisture will arrive further south.   A frontal boundary will largely stall over central and southern BC Wednesday night through the end of the week.  Northern areas are likely to see more precipitation over this period, with substantial uncertainty about how much will fall further south. There will be a slow warming trend over this period with snow levels eventually pushing to at least mid-elevations, if not higher. With a cold pool along the eastern slopes and ongoing easterly flow, we'll have to be on the lookout for periods of freezing rain near the Passes and along the eastern slopes of the Cascades over this stretch.

Previous forecast from Jan 25, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
