Weather Synopsis

An unusually persistent midwinter West Coast ridge resides just off the Pacific Northwest coastline, continuing to suppress the climatological storm track and favor dry weather and widespread sunshine.

Cold air remains entrenched following a dry "backdoor" cold frontal passage, which brought a modest surge of ENE flow carrying modified continental air into the region Thursday night into Friday. Ridgeline winds veer to the N overnight, then WNW on Saturday, remaining light overall but increasing slightly in the afternoon. As the offshore high gradually shifts eastward toward the coastline, warm air aloft gradually replaces the cooler air at middle and upper elevations.

Freezing levels rise to approximately 6000–7000 ft in southern portions of the forecast area and 5000–6000 ft farther north, potentially strengthening low-level inversions in some areas. Persistent low-level E flow maintains a shallow cold pool of sub-freezing temperatures near and east of the Cascade Crest at elevations below roughly 4500 ft. The backdoor cold front brought drier air and enough mixing to low levels east of the Cascades, mixing out much of the low stratus there, but we expect it to re-form either Friday night or Saturday night under clear skies and strong radiational cooling. Friday night should bring widespread 10s and perhaps a few single digits to deeper valley locations east of the Crest. Saturday night temperatures should moderate at most elevations.

As the ridge continues to weaken late Sunday, a weak approaching disturbance will introduce increasing high clouds and gradually strengthening, but mostly light, SW winds.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The weak disturbance compresses the ridge somewhat as it approaches our region with more widespread cloud cover Sunday night and a slight chance of very snow or mixed precipitation on Monday. The ridge rebounds in its wake, bringing warm and sunnier conditions on Tuesday.

Previous forecast from Jan 23, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
