Weather Synopsis

If you haven't already, settle into our dry, mild and sunny pattern (sunny in the mountains anyway).  A strong ridge of high pressure positioned offshore will keep the storm track well north of our area into the middle of next week.

Freezing levels will stay in the 11,000 - 13,000' range over this period.  Mid-mountain high temperatures will largely be in the mid to upper 40s near and east of the Cascade crest.  They will be in the 50s for the Olympics, Mt Hood, and for areas west of the Cascade crest Friday and Saturday. The coldest temperatures, near or below freezing overnight in the morning) will be found below persistent temperature inversions at the bottom of valleys and near Passes. Washington Pass will likely be the coldest spot per usual during this stretch.

Easterly offshore flow will continue to increase tonight and will continue through the weekend. This will create breezy easterly winds through the Passes and at times along ridgelines.  It will also pull very low clouds up to the Cascade Passes. Snoqualmie has the best chance of seeing low clouds/fog squeeze through the Pass proper, while the higher passes are more likely to keep the low clouds at bay to their east.  If you encounter low clouds at trailheads or ski area bases, climb higher to reach much drier, warmer, and sunnier conditions.

Extended Weather Synopsis

High, dry, and mild conditions will continue through the early part of next week. We'll see freezing levels slip downwards gradually Monday and Tuesday as the upper level ridging offshore begins to break down. Wetter weather is expected to return sometime next week, but it's up in the air if the first weather system arrives on Wednesday or holds off until later in the week.

Previous forecast from Jan 15, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
