Weather Synopsis

The Pacific NW has entered a week of more active weather. A weak low-pressure center tracking northward off the Oregon Coast on Thursday has ended an unseasonably strong ridge of high pressure. Light rain and higher elevation snow have spread into the southern and central Cascades west of the Crest, while snow or a wintry mix can be found near or east of the Crest. Snow levels are rising as this wave moves through, so the question becomes how long and how thick is the cold pool, and how quickly will increasing SW winds displace the cold air Thursday night into Friday. To put it mildly, this is a very tricky precipitation type forecast, and you should expect a lot of uncertainty if you're traveling near or east of the Cascade Crest.

The overall rain/snow line should rise to around 8000 ft at Mt Hood, 7000 ft for Mt Rainier, and 3500 ft near the Canadian Border. It will begin near the surface east of the Cascade Crest, with light precipitation expanding throughout the region during the evening hours. As the low tracks through Western Washington overnight, SW winds increase to moderate in the southern and central Cascades. These winds will scour out much of the cold air pool in the southern Washington Cascades by early evening, then Snoqualmie Pass by late evening, and Stevens Pass by Friday morning. Expect a 3-9-hour period of freezing rain potential and very hazardous driving conditions if enough low-level cold air lingers.

The moderate precipitation exits the region by 10 AM Friday, leaving light rain and snow, mainly over the central Cascades and the Mountain Loop, with snow levels in the 5000-6000 ft range.

A deeper closed low moves into the waters off the Oregon coast, maintaining some light precipitation, including an upslope component along the E slopes of the Cascades, Friday night. Another wave of precipitation moves over the region from SW to NE on Saturday with continued E flow.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The closed low should track into Western Washington Saturday night through Sunday with lowering snow levels and moderate precipitation. By Sunday, this will bring accumulating snow to most middle elevation areas. A reinforcing shortwave is likely to maintain moderate rain/snow or showers ahead of the upper-level trough through Monday. East flow finally calls it quits by Monday morning.

Previous forecast from Jan 1, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
