Weather Synopsis

We're in for a messy weather pattern over the Thanksgiving holiday as a frontal system impacts the region. Conditions get particularly tricky at the Passes, where cold easterly flow will battle milder air near and west of the Cascades. Overall, this storm is relatively mild, and while it will certainly add snow to the higher elevations, we may see another round of rain at the lower and potentially middle elevation trailheads.

Radar images on Wednesday afternoon already show precipitation associated with a warm front lifting from south to north across the area. These bands of precipitation will slowly move towards the Canadian border, arriving in the early morning hours. Cool easterly flow may keep Snoqualmie and Stevens Pass near or a bit below freezing, maintaining a slight chance of freezing rain near road levels. However, the reservoir of cold air east of the Cascades isn't very deep and isn't overly cold, limiting its impact at the Passes.

A trailing cold front swings through on Thanksgiving Day, spreading heavier rain and snow from SW to NE. Look for moderate but gusty winds to accompany this front, with locations like Mt Baker, Mission Ridge, Crystal, and Mt Hood potentially seeing stronger wind speeds. Overall, the timing of this storm appears a little later than previously forecasted. So, it may linger well into Thursday night.

While the models have good agreement on the initial frontal systems (Wednesday night and Thursday), they start to diverge significantly Thursday night. Post frontal showers will maintain precipitation along the west slopes of the Cascades and Olympics. Some models show the surface low pressure tracking across the southern portion of the forecast region, significantly increasing rain and snow from about I90 southward. If this track holds, it could also produce a period of upslope rain and snow in the Wenatchee Mountains.

While a few showers may linger into Friday morning, the overall trend will be for drying and clearing. A high pressure ridge starts to build over the eastern Pacific, ushering in slightly cooler and drier air.

Extended Weather Synopsis

With a high-pressure ridge established in the eastern Pacific Ocean, we won't see any major storm systems heading our way. Cool and generally dry northrery winds should make for a nice Saturday. However, clouds passing over the ridge could keep us from seeing a perfectly sunny day. Even if we aren't expecting a big storm, there could be a weak short-wave system sliding down the ridge into our area. Since this disturbance tracks over British Columbia rather than arriving off the Pacific, it likely won't have too much in the way of precipitation. More likely it will result in increasing clouds, stronger winds, and a few snow flakes in the mountains.

Previous forecast from Nov 26, 2025

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
