Snow is falling across most of the mountains and along the valleys on the east side of the Cascades as a frontal system slams into the Pacific Northwest this afternoon. We're just getting started as warm frontal moisture rides along in westerly flow and precipitation rates peak later this afternoon and evening, with the heaviest precipitation/snowfall totals expected for the south and central WA Cascades before precipitation begins to taper off late tonight.
Unfortunately, we'll see a slow warming trend as the jet stream lifts north with this system, so we can expect some lower and even mid-elevation trailheads near and south of I-90 to experience a change to rain later tonight, with even higher snow levels for Mt Hood. During this warm-up tonight, we may see a few hours of light freezing rain, especially near the Snoqualmie Pass corridor, although this is unlikely to be a significant icing event.
We'll see a bit of a break in the action on Wednesday, as another frontal system gears up offshore. Snow levels will be on the mild side and there should be plenty of cloud cover in advance of the next system. Warm frontal precipitation may glance the Mt Hood area and the southern Olympics Wed afternoon.
The warm front will lift north Wednesday night towards the Canadian border as the trailing cold front slowly approaches. Periods of light rain and snow, with a chance of freezing rain for the Passes Wednesday night will give way to steadier precipitation on Thanksgiving. Snow levels will be middling with this storm, with snow levels generally in the 4000-5000' range for the Cascades.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The low will drift inland Thursday night, likely delivering one final shot of moderate preciptation to the south/central Washington Cascades as snow levels lower into the 3000-4000' range. A drying trend should ensue on Friday as strong upper level ridging builds offshore. We'll be caught between two broad weather features, a strong ridge offshore and a deep trough over the western/central US. Our weather should be benign, but if we're closer to the upper level trough, we may see some weak weather disturbances slide over the area in northerly flow, while if the ridge exerts more influence, we'll be mild and dry over the weekend.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
