Weather Synopsis

This morning, a blip of a system brought a bit of drizzle, perhaps a dusting of snow, some increasing winds, and not much else. Many mountain locations saw a mix of sun and clouds with cool temperatures and decreasing wind speeds through the day. This evening, a cool trough will drop down from the north, bringing showers and decreasing snow levels through the day on Sunday. Moderate to occasionally strong ridgeline winds hone in on the East Central and East South, but winds elsewhere are generally light to moderate. Snow levels bump up just a bit during the day Sunday before cooling further Sunday night into Monday morning, bottoming out around 2500ft. Storm totals are generally light through the day, favoring the West Slopes and passes I-90 and north, especially the Mount Baker area, where 1 to 6” of snow may fall.

As the trough passes by and heads east, the focus switches to a Puget Sound Convergence Zone that looks to take aim at the Snoqualmie Pass area in the evening and overnight hours into Monday. We still have to work out the details, but where the bullseye lands, a few inches down low and 6-10" at mid and upper elevations are possible. Parts of the West Central and Stevens Pass could benefit as well, depending on how things take shape.

Precipitation begins to taper on Monday, with some snow showers lingering at the passes and West Central/West North. Even there, things should dry out by Monday evening. Temperatures remain cool with northwest flow aloft. Sun breaks should increase in the afternoon, especially east and south.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A few lovely days in the hills are in store for the extended period. On Tuesday, a dry trough with NNW flow aloft keeps the temperatures cool and the mountains dry. Wednesday, a high-pressure ridge starts to build, peaking on Thursday with warming temperatures and sunny skies.

Previous forecast from Apr 18, 2025

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
