Our week of beach weather crested on Friday, as mountain travelers were greeted with sunny skies and temperatures soaring into the 50's at 5000ft. A weak front approaches this evening, as clouds thicken and lower. Temperatures and snow levels fall into the 4000-6000ft range with the frontal passage on Saturday morning, but weak is the important descriptor for this system. Precipitation totals are paltry, totaling less than a tenth of an inch across the board Friday night and Saturday during the day, bringing not much more than a dusting of snow at best. Aside from scattered lingering showers on the west slopes on Saturday, many locations, especially south and east, will see sunshine in the afternoon. Temperatures will remain cool with moderate to occasionally strong westerly winds targeting the East Central and East South zones Friday through much of the weekend.
Saturday night into Sunday, a trough drops down from the north, bringing with it an uptick in precipitation throughout the forecast area. With below-normal temperatures, snow levels will continue to lower into the 3000-4000ft range. Storm totals aren’t much, but whatever does fall this weekend will be at its heaviest Sunday mid-morning through the overnight hours into Monday, as precipitation favors the west slopes and passes from I-90 North.

Extended Weather Synopsis
With some help from a convergence zone Sunday evening, the winning location could see up to 6-8” of snow at middle and upper elevations from Friday night through Monday morning. As of now, models place the convergence bullseye somewhere in the Snoqualmie to Stevens Pass Zone. If precipitation rates intensify just enough, we could see light accumulating snow on I-90 at the Pass. Outside of the convergence zone, even favored areas west and north will likely only eek out an inch or three in total over the weekend.
Precipitation should begin to taper through the day Monday as the trough shifts east, with partial clearing expected later in the day, especially south in zone and east of the crest. A short-lived and mostly dry trough fills in on Tuesday, but it doesn’t really bring any precipitation with it. Cool temperatures with sun and clouds should be on tap. By Wednesday, a weak ridge starts to build with more clearing and warming temperatures expected through the rest of the week.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
