Weather Synopsis

It's a quiet afternoon across the NWAC forecast region with a mix of clouds, sunshine, and even a few very isolated showers. A weak trough will push inland across the area overnight, bringing increasing clouds, cooling temperatures, strengthening winds, and light precipitation. Expect clouds to thicken and lower this evening. How quickly these clouds roll in will have a big impact on the overnight low temperatures and freeze of the snow surface. If they are early, it may be a bit warmer than expected.

Generally, light precipitation should spread from north to south after midnight. Overall, snow levels should be below most trailhead elevations. Since the precipitation arrives right over our forecast time splits (night 1 and day 1), it makes the timing piece important. Even if the "storm" is early (or late), the water totals should be fairly steady for the 24 hr period. There's not a lot of moisture with this disturbance, so most of the precipitation should fizzle out near and west of the Crest north of Mt Rainier. A Puget Sound Convergence Zone could bring locally heavier snow to areas from the Mt Loop Hwy to Hwy 2.

By Saturday afternoon, a building high pressure ridge should quickly draw showers to a close. Look for significant sun breaks and even clearing skies by the afternoon. While sunshine will be most common east of the Crest, on Mt Hood, and in the West South zone, don't be surprised if the blue skies push even further north.

The high pressure ridge continues to build Saturday night. Mostly clear skies and some lingering low level moisture could create fog in some of the mountain valleys and passes. It will be quite chilly (and maybe foggy) to start Sunday, but make no mistake, plenty of sunshine and warming temperatures will make for a beautiful Spring day.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A high pressure ridge parked over the Pacific Northwest will stay firmly in control of our weather for the first part of the work week. Expect warm, sunny days, and cool, clear nights. The big questions will be the timing of passing bands of high clouds and periods of slightly stronger winds. A pair of disturbances passing to the north both Tuesday and Wednesday could drift clouds over the area, but they should be high, mostly thin, and transient. Offshore flow on Monday could peak with moderate to strong ridgeline winds. So, while there are a few nuances still to be hammered out, there's strong confidence in a very beautiful Spring-like week.

Previous forecast from Apr 11, 2025

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
