A narrow cold front is making landfall this afternoon and will push into the west slopes of the Cascades by 3 pm or so. Cloud cover has increased ahead of the front, as have gusty southwesterly winds. Mountain temperatures are downright balmy in the 40’s and 50’s, and thus most of the precipitation will fall as rain except for the highest elevations. Even there, snow accumulation should be quite modest as there just isn’t much to this front. A slight chance of thunder remains for the West North during frontal passage around 4 or 5 pm. Temperatures will plummet this evening and overnight with some very weak post-frontal banding taking aim at the West Central and West North Zones, with a weak wave this evening and another early through mid-morning Friday. With snow levels dropping to 3000ft, those zones could pick up a few inches of snow, but even in the bullseye, totals aren’t impressive.
Conditions remain cool on Friday as an upper-level trough sits offshore. Wind speeds continue to decline and most areas stay relatively dry, save for a spotty snow shower or two. Any precipitation that does fall during the day should be in the form of snow down to all trailhead elevations, but we don’t expect additional accumulations during the bulk of the day. Expect a mix of clouds and sun, with more sunshine south and east.
The trough moves overhead Friday night into Saturday morning as light snowfall becomes more widespread, continuing through the day before tapering in the evening. It will be a cool day with sunbreaks possible on the mid and upper slopes, especially east and south. Again, snow totals are meager. Skies should clear overnight to Sunday, as an upper-level ridge starts to build.

Extended Weather Synopsis
After a cold Saturday night, the ridge continues to amplify Sunday bringing calm weather and warm temperatures. Freezing levels jump up toward 9000-1000ft Sunday afternoon. High and dry weather continues through the day Monday, at least.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
