A very active weather pattern will allow the snow to accumulate throughout the work week, but it will be accompanied by impactful winds in most areas.
A well-defined band of precipitation has reached the Washington coastline on Wednesday afternoon, with light rain and snow developing over the northern half of the Cascades. The moderate precipitation band will pass through the region during the evening hours. Expect widespread moderate ridgeline winds, which will be locally strong around Mt Baker and Mt Hood. A secondary low-pressure center crosses the Oregon Cascades and moves into central Washington, increasing the likelihood of steadier accumulating snowfall to the east slopes of the Cascades. Snow levels peak around 3000-4000 ft during the evening hours before dropping to around 2500 ft overnight behind the cold front.
Decreasing light to moderate snow rain and snow showers will focus on areas near and west of the Cascade Crest, with 2000-3000 ft snow levels on Thursday. Moderate ridgeline winds will focus on areas near and east of the Cascade Crest, while winds continue to be strong at times for Mt Hood, particularly in the morning hours.
Without a well-defined break in the action, a more substantial system approaches Thursday evening with widespread moderate to locally heavy rain, snow, and SW winds. The cold front moves through in the early morning hours with a subtle shift to WSW winds, moderate rain/snow showers, and convergence. A well-defined convergence band likely focuses on the Mt Baker area to start the day but shifts southward toward the central Cascades in the afternoon. Snow levels rise to around 3000-4000 ft Thursday night and remain relatively steady on Friday.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A trough with brisk W flow over the area keeps the post-frontal moderate snow showers and heavy convergences going Thursday night, becoming light overnight. A broad ridge builds into the area Saturday and Saturday night, with very light rain/snow shower activity spilling into the west slopes of the ranges as snow levels rise. A warm, moisture-laden atmospheric river impacts southern British Columbia on Sunday, with rain and high-elevation snow likely impacting Washington State as well. The southward extent of the firehose remains difficult to forecast 5 days out.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
