On Wednesday afternoon, disorganized bands of rain and snow continue to bring periods of rain and snow to the area, moving in on a SSW flow. This relative break comes to an end as a frontal wave currently just off the California/Oregon coast rides NNE into our area Wednesday evening and overnight, bringing a widespread swath of moderate precipitation. The subtle low pressure center is forecast to track just east of the Cascades, helping focus the heaviest precipitation initially on areas on the eastern edge of the Cascades thanks to SE ridgeline winds. In its wake, moderate to strong W winds will be impactful near and east of the Cascade Crest. These winds will peak Thursday morning in most areas. The winds will focus shower activity on the west slopes of the Cascades in the early morning hours through Thursday as snow levels plummet from around 4000 ft in the evening to 2000 ft throughout Wednesday night.
On Thursday, light to moderate and increasingly convective shower activity continues with snow levels remaining around 2000 ft. Thunderstorms remain possible in the afternoon, particularly in southern portions of the forecast region. Locally heavy precipitation is likely in convergence bands focusing on the Mountain Loop or Mt Baker areas during the afternoon.
WSW winds gradually ease along with snow shower and convergence activity focused along the west slopes of the Cascades Thursday night. Friday morning brings a relative break in the action as another system approaches. Light snow spreads into the southern half of the forecast region during the afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The low pressure center tracks tracks over NW Washington State on Friday, bringing increasing SW winds and moderate snowfall to the west slopes of the Cascades (light snowfall further east). WSW winds maintain moderate snow showers on Saturday for the west slopes of the Cascades. Don't expect much of a break in the action Saturday night before a stronger system impacts the region with moderate to heavy rain and snow along with intense winds. Temperatures will be below to near seasonal norms.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
