Weather Synopsis

The Pacific Northwest remains in a very moist and strong SW flow as an atmospheric river bears down on the region through Sunday evening.

The most significant frontal wave of the atmospheric river reaches NW Washington and moves through the Cascades during the evening hours, spreading very heavy rain and higher-elevation snow throughout the region. The frontal wave is associated with a surface low tracking toward Heida Gwaii. The heaviest of the precipitation is likely to shift towards the central and southern Cascades as the night progresses, with the strongest SSW and SW ridgeline winds likely to be during the evening hours in the 20-30 mph range as snow levels peak in the 6000-9000 ft range.

Very heavy precipitation continues between frontal waves Sunday morning for the southern half of the Cascades with snow levels in the 5500-8500 ft range. Light to moderate precipitation can be expected further north and in the Olympics. In these areas, snow levels lower to 4500-5500 ft in the morning, rising to 5500-7000 ft in the afternoon. The final wave shifts SW flow more SSW in the afternoon and lifts heavy moisture back into the central and possibly northern Cascades. Moderate to heavy rain and snow continue Sunday evening and become light to moderate overnight as the final wave of moisture lifts NE of the area. Snow levels gradually lower throughout the night.

A deep low pressure off the Oregon coast approaches the region with a warm front Monday morning, spreading light rain and snow into the southern Cascades and Olympics. That precipitation intensifies throughout the afternoon and spreads north to the Canadian border with E flow, enabling significant spillover to the east slopes of the Cascades.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Moderate to heavy rain and snow continue Monday night and Tuesday as the low moves onshore. Expect decreasing moderate rain and snow on Tuesday as the low moves inland into British Columbia. Expect a return to snow at Stevens Pass and Mt Baker ski area bases with this event. A ridge develops Tuesday night and expands Wednesday bringing much milder conditions and moderate to strong E flow.

Previous forecast from Feb 22, 2025

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
