An upper-level low off the Western Washington coastline continues to spin isolated and light snow showers into the Puget Sound Lowlands and the Olympic Peninsula. At the same time, Fraser outflow and low-level east flow are helping to keep things cool while creating somewhat favorable conditions for light upslope snow showers along the east slopes of the Cascades and northeast slopes of the Olympics. With all the lowland accumulation (Neah Bay reports 7”!), you might think it would be hammering snow in the mountains, but alas, it is not. While generally cloudy conditions persist, the weak onshore flow isn’t doing much to steer these showers into the mountains and the moisture is being squeezed out at the lower elevations. We do expect some light showers to make their way into both sides of the crest this evening and overnight, but accumulations will be very spotty and hit or miss. Simply put, there is a lot of uncertainty and low predictability associated with this type of weather pattern. As of this afternoon, it seems the West South may win the sweepstakes overnight, but we are talking generally low totals (a few inches perhaps), and we wouldn’t be surprised if they got less and a different zone got a little bit more. Whatever does fall should be low density and fluffy!
Moving forward into Tuesday, expect more of the same. The trough will start to dive south and west, and conditions will remain generally cold. Light to moderate winds are a bit variable depending on elevation as these multiple features fight it out for dominance in direction. The general trend will be for lower-level east flow, weak west flow at higher elevations, mid-elevation temperatures in the teens and 20’s, and spotty sporadic snow showers. Little change in the pattern through Wednesday, with more hit or miss accumulations and some breaks in the clouds. The big exception here is Mount Hood and parts of the West and East South, which could benefit from the very northern portion of a sizeable storm impacting California to the northeast through Montana. We will have to watch that play out tomorrow and hone in on Wednesday's precipitation totals for the southern zones.

Extended Weather Synopsis
On Thursday, the trough weakens and the jet stream slides well south into Northern California. Fraser outflow starts to back off Thursday and east flow eases into Friday morning. As of now, it looks like the WA Cascades and Olympics see a general drying and clearing trend through both days, especially north of I-90, while Mount Hood could see another round of precipitation.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
