A cold upper level low will slowly drift south from its current position over Vancouver Island to our offshore waters over the next few days. And while it does, it will continue to rotate a steady stream of snow showers over the region characterized by scattered showers in the overnight and morning hours, and then increase both in coverage and in intensity in the afternoon and early evening in this cold, unstable air mass with WSW flow aloft. Blustery ridgeline winds out of the West will continue to ease overnight into the light to moderate range on Sunday, staying elevated the longest in the Mt Hood area.
The good news is we have a steady supply of cold powdery snow arriving every 12 hours through Sunday night. The Olympics and northwest Cascades, including the Mt Baker and Mt Loop corridor, may be the winner snow-wise in this pattern, but all areas will see at least a few inches of snow. The caveat in this pattern is for areas further east of the Cascade crest where new snow amounts will tail off rapidly, including for areas near and further east of Icicle Creek/Tumwater Canyon.
The snow shower pattern is less clear for Monday. Strong high pressure sliding down the Canadian Rockies will start to drive modified arctic air into eastern WA and down through the Fraser River Valley while the same upper level low sits over our offshore waters. A broad brush light snow shower forecast has been applied, but some areas over the Olympics or west slopes of the Cascades could see more moderate snowfall depending on how this plays out. Light upslope snow showers and cloudier conditions along the east slopes of the Cascades seem like a good bet.
Be prepared for cold temperatures. Mid-mountain temperatures will struggle to reach 20F during the day, and you'll encounter lower teens and even single digits as you climb to higher elevations. Even colder weather will settle in early next week.

Extended Weather Synopsis
There's not a lot of confidence in how the snow shower pattern will play out next week, only that cold weather will continue. Plan for some of the coldest temperatures of the season and at least a chance of snow showers each day.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
