Weather Synopsis

Yet another beautiful day across the forecast region. Mostly sunny skies and light winds combined with a warming airmass to create conditions more like April than January. Even still, cold temperatures continue to cling to some of the valleys and passes near and east of the Cascade Crest.

Overnight, mostly clear skies will once again allow temperature inversions to establish in low-lying areas. The freezing levels do a poor job of painting this picture. Even as trailheads become frigid, slopes higher up the hillside should continue to warm. As offshore flow weakens in the wee hours of the morning, more of this mid and upper-elevation warm air pushes further east.

An approaching short-wave disturbance will cause the high pressure ridge entrenched in the eastern Pacific to bend but not break on Thursday. Look for generally high and thin clouds in the morning to slowly thicken and lower as the day progresses. W-NW winds should also increase particularly in the afternoon. This should help mix out any chilly temperature inversions left over from the morning.

While you could see a few flurries near Mt Baker right before sunset, most precipitation should hold off until the evening. Unfortunately, there's not much left of this storm by the time it arrives. Temperatures quickly fall, but without much moisture, it only looks like a dusting of snow for most areas. High-end snow totals of an inch or two could occur from the Mt Loop Highway north, but that's about it.

The high pressure ridge quickly rebounds by Friday morning as the system exists to the SE. Our region is left under cold and dry northerly flow. This should once again bring us plenty of sunshine and cool temperatures.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The persistent high pressure ridge continues to drive our weather through the weekend keeping us generally sunny and dry. Northerly winds aloft coming from interior British Columbia will usher in cold temperatures. With clear skies, temperature inversions once again return overnight with weak daytime (diurnal) warming in the afternoon. Offshore (east) flow at low levels once again draws the cold air pool in central Washington up against the eastern slopes of the Cascades, making lower lying areas quite chilly. The ridge eventually drifts east early Sunday allowing a much warmer airmass to push into the region. This could set up strong temperature inversions where the valleys and passes stay in the ice box even as higher elevation slopes warm significantly.

Previous forecast from Jan 22, 2025

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
