Weather Synopsis

The last weekend of the 2023/2024 avalanche forecasting season features mostly dry conditions and light winds thanks to a “split flow” pattern. The split flow results from an upper-level low dropping south off the California Coastline while a weak northern branch of the jetstream resides to our north in British Columbia. Through Sunday morning, the broad region of clouds and unsettled weather extends northward to approximately Mt Hood and at times into the southernmost Washington Cascades. A weak disturbance wrapping around the low Saturday afternoon and evening may bring some scattered showers or even a few thunderstorms to these areas.

The major story will be the warmth. Significant warming occurred during the day on Friday with 5000 ft temperatures rising into the upper 30s and 40s in most areas. Freezing levels continue to rise rapidly Friday and remain steady in the 6,500-9,500 ft range overnight. Mostly clear skies should assist overnight refreezes in open areas thanks to radiational cooling. Freezing levels rise to 8,500-10,000 ft by Saturday afternoon, then to 9,000-10,500 ft Saturday night. A broad trough easing southward gradually increases W winds on Sunday, bringing temperatures down a few degrees west of the Cascade Crest. The cooling will be delayed further east.

Extended Weather Synopsis

More significant cooling arrives Sunday night as a broad closed low passes to our north and brings a trough into our region. Very light rain and snow showers starting up in the early morning hours on Monday for the west slopes of the Cascades. Rain and snow showers peak Monday and Monday night. Snow levels should be in the 3000-4000 ft range, a marked departure from the unseasonably warm weather over the weekend. Expect chances of moderate to occasionally strong ridgeline winds along the east slopes of the Cascades.

Previous forecast from Apr 12, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
