Weather Synopsis

We've left the dry and mild weather from the last few days in the rearview mirror and stepped into a cooler, more unsettled pattern for at least the next several days. Scattered showers will wane this evening with mostly dry conditions overnight.  An upper low will drop south along the coastline tonight and begin to spin up a shortwave trough in SSE flow on Thursday. A broad area of showers should impact the Mt Hood region early in the morning, with showers spreading northward along the east slopes of the Cascades during the day with showers drifting to E to W.  Most locations are looking between 0.10-0.30" of water Thursday, for 1-4" of snow, with the slightly higher amounts likely east of the Cascade crest. Snow levels will rise from about 2500' in the morning to around 3500' in the afternoon but look for freezing levels to pop to 4000-4500' during prolonged breaks between showers.

Showers should once again continue into the evening and then taper down Thursday night. There's poor forecast model agreement for how Friday plays out. The closed upper low will drift into Califonia on Friday with a lingering upper trough over the PNW.  We may see general popcorn type PM showers associated with an upper trough in spring, or we may see another shortwave rotate up from the south and deliver another round of more concentrated and slightly heavier showers in SSE flow again.

Extended Weather Synopsis

On Saturday a weak Pacific frontal system approaches and we'll likely see an increase in afternoon showers, especially along the Olymipcs, Mt Hood and west slopes of the Cascades.  The trough axis shifts east of the Cascades Saturday night and Sunday, but we'll see a renewed chance of afternoon showers in the afternoon.  We'll continue to be on the cool side regarding snow/freezing levels with mountain temperatures comfortably sitting below freezing during the overnight and morning hours.

Previous forecast from Apr 3, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
