Weather Synopsis

A powerful and slow-moving frontal system continues to slam into the Pacific Northwest, delivering moderate to heavy rain and snow along with strong to extreme SW winds. Stormy conditions will persist tonight, with snow levels peaking this afternoon and through this evening in the 4000-4500' for the north Cascades, 4500-5000' for the central Cascades/Olymipcs, 5000-5500' for the south Washington Cascades, and 5500-6000' for Mt Hood. The cold front will sag south from the NW tonight, passing through the central Cascades around midnight with heavier precipitation and the strongest winds lingering through the wee morning hours for the South Washington Cascades and Mt Hood.

Steady precipitation will transition to showers late tonight and Thursday with a sharp cooling trend following the frontal passage. A cold upper level trough will move offshore, setting up a cold unstable air mass over the area. Showers will pile up the more additional snow, especially along the west slopes of the Cascades with a highlight on the Mt Baker area and the SW slopes of the Olymipcs. Expect much lighter accumulations east of the Cascade crest along with slightly warmer temps and some afternoon sunbreaks. Expect plenty of graupel in heavier showers, especially during the afternoon and evening.

Our cold pattern thanks to the upper level trough positioned offshore will continue on Friday with additional light to locally moderate snow showers.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Snow levels will stay quite low Friday night through the weekend, generally falling near or just above sea-level overnight and rebounding to 1500-2500' during the day.  Upper level disturbances rotating out of the upper low will add some vigor and focus to the showers but timing these features will be difficult.  Mountain locations will see incremental shots of lower density snow accumulate every 12 hrs as we roll into early March.

Previous forecast from Feb 28, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
