A quasi-stationary low pressure system off the coast of Oregon will drift northward through Wednesday, rotating showers over the area over the next day and a half. Showers will come in waves with a bit of a lull tonight and then increasing again on Wednesday. The southwest Cascades will pick up the most precipitation through tomorrow afternoon with the highest water numbers likely for the southern slopes of Mt Rainier and Mt St Helens. A brief period of S-SE winds later tonight through Wednesday morning will spread shower activity further along the east slopes of the Cascades before the flow becomes more SW-erly Wednesday afternoon. We'll see rain at lower elevation trailheads and Passes with the snow level around 4000-4500' for most areas through Wednesday.
Upper level ridging will build over the area late Wednesday night and Thursday. We may see a few stray showers over the Olympic peninsula and northwest Cascades but overall, a drying trend will take hold. Winds will be fairly light out of the W-SW and freezing levels will rise to 4500-5500' in the afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Dry, mild and mostly sunny weather will make for a pleasant end to the work week. Upper level ridging will begin to flatten on Friday and further Friday night, allowing clouds and perhaps some light precipitation to reach the northern half of the forecast area during the day on Saturday. It's looking increasingly likely a pattern change is on the horizon, with a frontal system slamming into the area on Sunday, and a potentially strong system on its heels early next week. Snow levels may start out above some lower traileheads and Passes, but we'll eventually enter the cold and snowy pattern. How long this lasts is still up in the air...but finally, we have some real winter weather to focus on.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
