Weather Synopsis

If you liked today's weather, you're in luck. We're in for a bit of a "rinse and repeat" pattern for both Monday and Tuesday. The major differences will be gradually increasing snow levels and a touch more precipitation.

Light showers continue to lift from S to N this afternoon along the Cascades. Behind the dissipating front, slightly drier air is moving in with a few sun breaks around Mt Hood and Southern forecast zones. Overnight, a few showers may linger into the evening in the Central and Northern Cascades, but the overall trend will be for drying, clearing, and returning to E-SE winds.

A low-pressure center off the northern California coast will spin a wave of moisture into the region. Once again, showers will arrive near Mt Hood around midnight and slowly work their way from S to N. This "storm" is pretty weak and falls apart as it travels further into WA. With southerly flow, precipitation favors the volcanoes. However, even the wettest location should only pick up a few inches of snow. The winds may be a bigger story than the precipitation. Expect ridgeline winds to turn more E-SE and increase overnight and into Monday morning. Sites along the crest and mountain gaps could experience moderate to strong and gusty winds. A diminishing cold air pool east of the Cascades limits any additional cooling, and snow levels on both sides of the mountains should slowly rise.

As if on repeat, showers dwindle as we head into Monday night with at least some partial clearing. Our next wave of moisture arrives at Mt Hood in the overnight hours and again slowly drifts from S to N. With the parent low shifting closer and a bit more southwesterly flow, this second storm should bring more precipitation. Even still accumulations are modest, and snow levels even out around 4000 to 5000 feet across the region.

Extended Weather Synopsis

As the low pressure off the coast continues to weaken, it transitions into an open trough. While this doesn't bring us any significant storms, it also keeps us from fully drying out. Waves of showers should pass over the region as subtle impulses travel northward. This levels us in a rather stagnant pattern with SSW flow, very light showers, and near stationary snow levels. Eventually, a high-pressure ridge seems to build into the area on Thursday. This should put an end to the precipitation and allow for more significant clearing.

Previous forecast from Feb 18, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
