Weather Synopsis

Most showers stayed near and west of I-5 today, bringing a bit of rain and snow to the southern Olympics. Elsewhere, dry but windy conditions prevailed. Warm air continues to try to shove its way into the region. You can see its effect in the Olympics, West North, and West Central zones where 5000ft temps reached well above freezing. Cold east winds have managed to keep it at bay in other areas.

A subtle impulse will push the stalled warm front northward overnight and into Sunday. This will have several impacts on the weather. Showers will slowly spread from S to N along both sides of the Cascades. With the southerly flow, precipitation will generally favor the volcanoes. However, accumulations will probably be meager. Areas near Mt Hood, Mt St Helens, and Mt Rainier could manage 3-6 inches of snow by the afternoon. The strong easterly winds will continue to decrease and ultimately shift more S and then SW. Once they turn more westerly, they should once again increase.  Finally, the decline in easterly flow will allow milder air to move into the Cascades. Look for temperatures to slowly climb on Sunday afternoon. Lingering east flow at Stevens, and potentially Snoqualmie, Passes could keep snow levels at or below road levels through most of the precipitation.

Showers taper sharply and skies could start to break late Sunday afternoon and overnight. However, by Monday, the leftovers from a low-pressure system will travel northward along the California coast and once again bring showers to the mountains. Similar to Sunday's precipitation, southerly flow favors the volcanoes, and as the system falls apart, this won't be much of a snow producer.

Extended Weather Synopsis

We'll find ourselves under a broad open trough through the first part of the week. This rather stagnant pattern generally doesn't result in any major precipitation, but it will also keep us from fully drying out. Expect periods of showers passing over the region. Right now the potential for a developing surface low could increase shower activity Tuesday afternoon and evening. Otherwise, expect partly to mostly cloudy skies and light easterly flow through the Passes.

Previous forecast from Feb 17, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
