A warm front continues to slowly lift north over our area, plowing a steady stream of moisture over the area with a focus on the Mt Hood area and the south and central WA Cascades on both sides of the crest. Strong high pressure anchored inland and the center of low pressure system offshore continues to draw a steady tap of very cold air from eastern WA and through the Passes. The western boundary of the cold air will continue to erode over the next 24 hours as SW flow pumping milder air in aloft.
This should make for a messy precipitation-type forecast tonight and Friday for many areas near the Cascade crest. Look for localized freezing rain tonight for the Mt Hood area, most likely for middle and lower elevations along with heavy precipitation through the evening and varying wind directions. For the WA Cascades, the western foothills are likely to see freezing rain with heavy snow closer to the Pass and on the east side. As warm frontal precipitation lifts north over the area and ends tomorrow morning, that's the most likely time to see a period of light icing for White and Snoqualmie Pass, and along the east slopes of the Cascades south of I-90. Stevens Pass and along the east slopes of the Cascades north of I-90, this will most likely be an all-snow event all high uncertainty remains. Moderate to locally strong S-SE winds will continue overnight as well.
As the frontal feature hangs up over the Olympics and northwest Cascades late tonight through Friday, we should see a more straight forward warm-up and a switch from snow to rain at mid-elevations.
We should temporarily dry out Friday night and Saturday. The exception would be a chance of showers rotating up from the south over the Olympic peninsula. Temperatures will continue to moderate over the region. Temperature inversions will be commonplace near the Passes; look for cold air and low clouds in the Passes and milder air at mid or upper slopes.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Temperatures will continue to gradually moderate Sunday and Monday with a few disturbances rotating up showers at times. Showers will likely be heaviest over the Olympic peninsula and west slopes of the Cascades further away from the Cascade crest.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
