Weather Synopsis

A very active weather pattern will continue over the next several days as incoming storms interact with an entrenched cold air mass over the region.  Eventually, the cold air over area will moderate, but not without twists and turns and bouts of wintry mixed precipitation.

A sharp upper level trough will pass through Cascades this afternoon. This will bring strong westerly ridgeline winds down to Pass level and temporarily mix out the strong temperature inversions due to east winds and bring an end to localized freezing rain near and east of the Cascade Passes. The heavy snowfall many areas are seeing this afternoon will become focused on the Mt Hood area this evening. Post-frontal showers along the west slopes of the Cascades will quickly become scattered later this afternoon and largely fizzle into the evening. Strong westerly winds will also ramp down after midnight over the WA Cascades.

Strong arctic high pressure anchored over the front range of the Canadian and northern US Rockies will drive a reinforcing shot back across the Cascades tonight. A warm front will lift from south to north across the area on Thursday, hanging up across the south Washington Cascades. Light snow will be found along both sides of the Cascades with increasing snowfall rates south of I-90 and down near Mt Hood. Strong SE ridgeline winds will keep the tap of cold air from eastern WA coming...and the precipitation type as all snow except the Olymipcs where mixed precipitation may occur.

Another frontal wave will rotate up similarly on Thursday night and Friday. This round should feature stronger SW winds aloft which will reintroduce the potential for freezing rain back into the picture for the Mt Hood area Thursday night, and the central and southern Cascades on Friday. Some areas will start to see their freezing levels "pop" as warm air rides in aloft on Friday.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The active weather pattern continues with wave after wave of frontal precipitation trying to dislodge the cold air mass over the region. Each successive wave should have more luck, moderating temperatures overall and reducing the impact of the cold easterly flow that persists over this period. The Olympics and to a lesser extent the Mt Baker area should see the most precipitation through the weekend along with the highest snow levels. There will likely be periods of light freezing rain in and near the Cascade Passes as this plays out.

Previous forecast from Jan 17, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
