The end of the extended MLK weekend features dry weather at the tail end of an extremely cold air outbreak. Dry NW flow aloft continues with thin, high clouds over the area at times as offshore high gains increasing influence over the region through Monday night.
As of Sunday afternoon, cold air has settled into the lowlands on both sides of the Cascades, with a cold pool of more extreme cold air entrenched east of the Cascades. The coldest air exists below an inversion layer at about 5000 ft. Above that elevation, temperatures aren't exactly warm, but they are more typical of our region as WNW winds override the cold pool. Below 5000 ft, Snoqualmie and Stevens Pass finally crossed back above 0F for the first time since Friday afternoon. Temperatures in this entrenched cold air pool should remain in the 0-10F range for much of the period through Tuesday. E flow accelerates once again late Sunday night and the cold pool thickens, switching ridgeline winds through the lower mountain gaps easterly. This won't be the intense wind event that we had on Saturday but expect moderate winds for Snoqualmie Pass and some gusty winds in the western foothills of the Cascades. The other story will be gradual and sustained warming west of the Cascades. This creates a very strong temperature difference across the Cascades that helps to drive those wins.
Clouds increase late Monday night and Tuesday morning as a low breaks through the offshore ridge. Expect light snow to develop during the afternoon for Mt Hood and the southern Washington Cascades as well as the Olympics. This snow could mix with rain or freezing rain in lower-elevation valleys.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The low arrives with moderate precipitation Tuesday night as a frontal band lifts NE across the Cascades. A trailing trough and additional subtle disturbances keep snowfall going on Wednesday through Thursday. Many areas of the Cascades can expect 6-24" of relatively cold snow with the heaviest snowfall likely Wednesday afternoon with moderate to strong westerly post-frontal flow.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
