Weather Synopsis

Temperatures across the region remain well below normal but as the cold upper low moves east into the Great Plains, the surface high responsible for these temperatures gradually moderates. This allows temperatures to moderate across the region through Monday.

The compact closed low makes landfall in central Oregon Sunday evening. A deformation band on the north side of the low brings moderate to heavy snow to Mt Hood and the southernmost Washington Cascades through the evening hours, then tapering light snow showers overnight. Mt St Helens and Mt Adams should be on the fringe of the heavy snow and could pick up a quick 3-5" of snow while the Mt Rainier area may pick up an inch or so of snowfall. E flow decreases into the moderate range as pressure gradients ease across the Cascades.

By Sunday we've exited the worst of the recent cold air outbreak. Temperatures should be above 0F in most locations, although wind chills in through the mountain gaps may start the day below 0F. High temperatures will be 5-15 degrees warmer than Saturday near and east of the Cascade Crest but will be only a few degrees warmer in areas that already warmed up on Saturday further west. Expect mostly sunny skies with some high clouds filtering the sunshine in the afternoon. E winds may undercut west winds at ridgelines in the mountain gaps, but most winds will be light.

Dry NW flow continues to Monday night and Tuesday as an offshore high nudges toward the coast and continues the gradual warming trend. Expect light E flow to keep areas E of the Cascades and the mountain gaps cooler than normal.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Temperatures continue to moderate as a flattening ridge moves onshore Monday night and Tuesday. High clouds increase ahead of the next system tracking toward the Washington Coastline. With colder air east of the Cascades and increasing E flow through the mountain gaps, this precipitation should arrive as all snow for most of the Cascades. However, the Olympics could see snow levels rise to around 4000 ft when the precipitation arrives Tuesday afternoon. The frontal system spreads light to moderate snow through most of the region and moves onshore early Wednesday with the potential for a brief shift to W winds through the mountain gaps with post-frontal light snow showers before E flow returns.

Previous forecast from Jan 13, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
