Moisture continues to stream into the area as an atmospheric river impacts the region through Monday night. Freezing levels in most areas west of the Cascade Crest rose to 5000-6500 ft Monday afternoon. Expect these warm temperatures to persist through Monday even, but begin lowering as the front approaches in the early morning hours. Heavy rain and high-elevation snow focus on the volcanoes, particularly Mt Baker. Although precipitation was slow to pick up for Mt Baker on Christmas day, we expect upwards of 2" of snow water equivalent in 12 hours with snow levels dropping from 5000 to 4000 ft overnight. The flow pattern has not favored the major passes, but as the front arrives late Monday night, expect the possibility of a period of heavier precipitation and a potential shift from mixed precipitation to rain at Snoqualmie Pass as E flow relaxes somewhat heading into Tuesday morning. Snow or wintry mix remains most likely for Stevens Pass where 3-4" of snow accumulation is possible.
Precipitation rapidly decreases behind the front early Tuesday, but a convergence band likely maintains some locally moderate precipitation rates in the Mt Baker vicinity through mid-morning. By the afternoon, expect snow levels across the west slopes of the Cascades to lower to around 3500 ft with mostly cloudy skies and sprinkles/flurries.
Easterly flow rapidly intensifies as another deep offshore low spins off the coast. Expect moderate to locally strong E winds through the mountain gaps Tuesday night with a slightly weaker cold pool than with the last system along the east slopes of the Cascades.
A front splits somewhat and loses energy as it moves into the region on Wednesday afternoon. Expect bands of light precipitation to arrive on SSW flow during the day and focus on the volcanoes and S slopes of the Olympics. Strong E flow peaks during the morning hours and may bring another round of mixed precipitation to the passes.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Most of the moisture associated with Wednesday's system moves northward as high pressure begins to gain the upper hand against offshore troughs. Expect a gradual drying trend with unseasonably mild air west of the Cascades and cooler further east and through the mountain gaps.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
