We're in for an unseasonably mild and dry weekend but not without some caveats of course. West of the Cascade crest, mountain temperatures are basking in the 40s with partly sunny skies. Low clouds mired along the east slopes of the Cascades are still passing though the Cascade Passes thanks to persistent low-level easterly flow. There are a few dents in the grayscape that fills in the gaps between the taller peaks but this low level moisture have been slow to breakup in a meaningful way.
That should begin to change overnight as westerly flow and drier air begins to push east of the Cascade crest and easterly offshore flow gradients relax. On Saturday, Pass level flow should be stagnant or light westerly, helping to increase the odds of a breakout. Higher freezing levels should reach along the east slopes of the Cascades for the normally cooler spots in the region near and north of Hwy2. A frontal band dipping south from British Columbia won't produce any weather for our area but will bring an uptick in alpine winds. If you're climbing to highest peaks over the weekend, you'll likely encounter strong west winds over the Washington Cascades.
A cut-off upper level low off the California coast will float bands of high clouds over the area tonight through Sunday, leading to periods of filtered sunshine during the day. This same weather feature will begin to shift closer on Sunday. We may see an increase in clouds later in the day but more likely we'll have another mild and partly sunny day with mid-mountain temperatures in the 40s and freezing levels in the 8,000-10,000' range.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The upper low becomes an open trough Sunday night and begins to eject increasing amounts of moisture and cloud cover toward our area through early next week. The details of these systems are notoriously difficult to pin down. Here are some general ideas to expect from Sunday night through mid-week; falling snow levels, an increase in E-SE ridgeline winds, higher precipitation totals near the Cascade crest but especially over the Olympics, and the potential for mixed precipitation including freezing near and east of the Cascade Passes.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
