A weak front passed through earlier today and its wakes we have some drippy conditions left over in the Passes and generally cloudy skies intermingled with sunbreaks across the area. Milder air has mixed along the east slopes of the Cascades following the frontal passage and mountain temperatures are generally near or above freezing.
While conditions dry out for most areas tonight, light warm frontal moisture extending from a system located well offshore will clip the Olympic mountains and perhaps the northwest Cascades as it lifts north through Friday morning. An upper-level ridge centered over the Intermountain West will amplify on Friday and quickly shunt the precipitation well north into central British Columbia leaving us high and dry.
We'll see another battle of cool easterly flow and multiple freezing levels with warmer air aloft riding in from the SW Thursday night and Friday. Freezing levels will soar to 7-9000' for the Olympics, west slopes of the Cascades, with even milder conditions expected near Mt Hood on Friday. Relatively cooler air along the east slopes of the Cascades and in the major Cascade Passes will slowly erode on Friday with more measured warming and cooler temperatures down along lower slopes. We'll see more filtered sunshine and high clouds west of the Cascade crest and stubborn low clouds along the east slopes and Passes.
On Friday night and Saturday, milder air under the strong ridge of high pressure throughout the region. Once again, we should expect periods of high clouds and pleasant mid-mountain temperatures in the 40s. For those pushing to higher peaks on Saturday, the tail end of a jet streak to our north may allow for strong westerly winds near and above 8000' for the central and north Cascades.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Sunday will be another unseasonably mild day with at least partially sunny skies and high freezing levels. A broad cut-off upper level low wandering off the coast of California will begin to shift towards our area Sunday night. Clouds and showers are likely to follow on Monday in southerly flow aloft. Snow levels will come down with the onset of precipitation but will still be higher than most trailheads.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
