Weather Synopsis

2:15 update to fix a time issue in the extended forecast.

After an extended dry spell in late November, December starts with an active pattern that will kickstart our winter season! A series of waves will move through the region in rapid succession on a westerly flow. The first weak wave moved through early Thursday morning, fizzling as it moistened the atmosphere. The second wave draped N-S along the west coast as of Thursday afternoon will weaken slightly as it moves a band of mostly light snowfall through the Cascades Thursday evening. Light E flow will enable 1-3" snow amounts to spill over to the E slopes of the Cascades as well, while Paradise and Mt Hood can expect 3-6" snowfall amounts. With cold temperatures in place, expect higher-than-normal snow ratios around 15 to 1.

Post-frontal W flow keeps the snow showers going into early Friday morning, but a third wave will be hot on the heels of the second. Expect moderate to heavy snowfall with this system with snowfall rates peaking as the system moves through in the mid-day hours and switches low-level winds westerly. Snow levels will rise slightly to 2000-2500 ft in most areas; expect snow ratios in the 10 or 15 to 1 range. We'll be watching convergence bands which may locally amplify snow amounts in the central Cascades.

Decreasing light to moderate snow showers continue through the evening hours. Winds shift WSW or SW in advance of another potent wave arriving Friday night with more moderate to heavy snowfall and a subtle bump up in snow levels. Post-frontal snowfall gradually decreases as winds shift westerly behind the system on Saturday.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Increasingly warm weather shifts the predominant precipitation type to rain (with snow at upper elevations) as waves of moisture arrive from the SW. The first system is a strong warm front lifting northward from Oregon Saturday night and Sunday morning. Precipitation tapers slightly Sunday evening, but snow levels don't lower significantly except over northern Washington State where snow may return to just above trailhead locations, briefly. An atmospheric river moves onshore late Monday.

Previous forecast from Nov 30, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
