Weather Synopsis

The Pacific Northwest will experience mild, mostly clear skies and light winds through the end of the workweek. You can thank a tongue of high pressure extending across the Pacific Northwest and westward into the eastern Pacific for these extremely pleasant mid-November conditions.

Thursday night, the high pressure will continue to erode the cooler air that remains in place across central and northern Washington state. With inversions likely, the coldest temperatures will be found in deeper valley locations below around 5500 ft. Light E winds through the mountain gaps will keep the coldest temperatures along the east slopes of the range such as in the Methow Valley and near Washington Pass where temperates may linger in the 20s.

Friday will be the warmest day of the week with freezing levels rising to 9000-10500 ft in most locations, although the NE Cascades could remain slightly cooler. Expect a few, thin high clouds or filtered sunshine at times. Enjoy these conditions while they last.

High cloud cover will increase Friday night as the ridge shifts eastward and a trough moves toward our nearshore waters. Temperatures remain quite mild, but freezing levels begin to retreat slightly.

Saturday will be a transitional day with the trough reaching the coastline and spreading light precipitation into the Olympics and then the Washington Cascades during the afternoon hours. Snow levels start high (around 7000 ft in most areas).

Extended Weather Synopsis

A band of moderate rain, snow and possibly freezing rain moves through the Cascades Saturday evening with moderate to locally strong westerly winds bringing a round of moderate to occasionally heavy rain and snow as snow levels rapidly lower Saturday night into Sunday morning. Snow (and low-elevation rain) showers focus on the west slopes of the Cascades and gradually decrease during the day on Sunday. The heaviest amounts of precipitation with this system should be in the southern Cascade Volcanoes from Paradise to Mt Hood where mid and upper elevation locations could pick upwards of 1 ft of snow by the end of the day Sunday. We're also watching the potential for modest convergence in the vicinity of Stevens Pass on Sunday. Snoqualmie Pass level looks marginal for snowfall at this time but should get a rain/snow mix on Sunday and more significant snow totals above 3500 ft.

Previous forecast from Nov 15, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
