Friday may be the last hurrah for the sustained cold and snowy April pattern that has amplified snow depths to 100-120% of seasonal averages at most NWAC stations. Post-frontal very light rain/snow showers linger into the evening hours on Friday along the west slopes of the Cascades. Mostly cloudy skies remain overnight with a warm front just offshore spreading light showers into the Olympics and Mt Hood areas during the early morning hours and initiating a warming trend. The front lifts from SW to NE across the region on Saturday, bringing light rain and snow primarily near and west of the Cascade Crest. Models can't make up their minds whether shower activity will occurs south of I-90 during the daylight hours, but most indicate shower activity in the northern Cascades. Snow levels rise above ski area bases by 8 AM for Mt Hood and Snoqualmie Passes, by 10 AM for Stevens Pass, and by 2 PM for Mt Baker.
Saturday night, southerly winds continue to transport milder air into the region ahead of an associated cold front. Light rain and high-elevation snow gradually increase, peaking early Sunday morning with the frontal passage. The moderate SSW flow favors Mt Baker where we expect 1-1.5" of water equivalent Saturday night through Sunday. Most other areas can expect 0.1-0.5" of water equivalent, with less than 0.1" east of the Cascade Crest. Snow levels peak around 6000-7000 ft Saturday night before dropping to 5000-6000 ft Sunday afternoon with SW flow ahead of an incoming trough brings light postfrontal showers.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Light rain and higher elevation snow showers continue with SW flow as the upper trough moves onshore Sunday evening. Shower activity decreases overnight and Monday as upper-level flow shifts NNWerly in the wake of the trough. Snow levels lower briefly to around 3000 ft early Monday, rising to 3500 ft with heating. Expect dry conditions east of the Cascade Crest. A ridge of high pressure gradually amplifies across the region, bringing dry weather, clearing skies, and gradually warming temperatures Monday night into Tuesday/
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
