The last wave in a cold, unsettled weather pattern will bring tapering isolated to scattered snow/graupel showers that could be locally intense early Wednesday evening. Snow levels should linger around 2000 ft. Skies clear overnight, allowing freezing levels to lower to around 1500 ft in most areas.
On Thursday, a low-pressure center off the northern tip of Vancouver Island allows the jetstream to take aim at our region once again. High clouds lower and thicken during the morning hours with increasing southerly winds quickly moderating temperatures across the region. By the time light rain/snow starts to fall, snow levels should be in the 3000-4000 ft range. Precipitation spreads from the Olympics and Mt Hood areas in the late morning hours to around Snoqualmie Pass by 2 PM and to the Mt Baker and Mission Ridge areas late in the day. Ridgeline winds increase into the moderate range for Mt Hood during the afternoon.
Moderate to locally heavy rain/snow and winds peak Thursday evening as a front passes through the region, switching winds from SSW to WSW by the overnight hours. Mt Hood and Mt Baker stand to receive the most moisture. We expect around 5-10" of snow above the 3000-4000 ft rain/snow line for these areas with lesser amounts in other areas.
Lingering post-frontal rain/snow showers taper Friday morning with partly cloudy and isolated sprinkles/flurries for the west slopes of the Cascades by the afternoon. Expect a nice day along the east slopes of the Cascades.
The NWAC Forecast Office will be closed on Thursday, April 20th for an all-staff end-of-season meeting. Weather forecasting will resume on Friday, April 21st. If you need immediate assistance, please email forecasters@nwac.us and dennis.damico@nwac.us.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A weak and "dirty" ridge allows weak weather systems to bring light rain and high-elevation snow along with warming. A stronger and more organized frontal system displaces the ridge Saturday night bringing moderate rain and high-elevation snow along with a cooling trend.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
