A cold upper-level trough over the region continues to allow disturbances to rotate through the region. The disturbance passing through the Cascades Tuesday afternoon induced golfball-sized hail in a squall line originating from a convergence boundary. The disturbance shifted E of the area, allowing WSW winds to shift W during the evening hours. The strength of the convergence should diminish as the convergence band drops south to the Stevens Pass vicinity where moderate snowfall is possible at times through the evening hours. Snow showers in most areas should taper by around 10 PM. However, a compact upper low reaching the coastline in the evening will spread light snow into the Mt. Hood and Mt St Helens areas, along with the Olympics overnight. Light snowfall should continue south of I-90 through the morning hours with moderate ridgeline winds south of the low (around Mt Hood). Areas to the north of the low should have very light winds, partial sunshine, and instability snow/graupel showers developing in the afternoon but we're not expecting thunder.
The cold trough shifts eastward, cutting off lingering snow flurries Wednesday evening and allowing partially clearing skies overnight with a weak shortwave ridge moving onshore. A subtle trough arrives on light to occasionally moderate WNW flow bringing some light snow showers to the west slopes of the Washington Cascades during the afternoon.
Snow levels remain below the major mountain pass elevations through the forecast period with cooler-than-average mid-April temperatures.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Light snow flurries, snow showers, or weak convergence associated with an exiting shortwave trough taper Thursday night with partial clearing in most areas after midnight. The shortwave ridge responsible for the clearing skies maintains mostly dry weather on Friday with temperatures rebounding nicely after a chilly start. The ridge amplifies Friday with milder air moving in ahead of the next system and high clouds preventing some diurnal cooling. Saturday should be mild and overcast in most areas with clouds lowering and thickening. Freezing levels will rise to around 5000-7000 ft in the central and southern Cascades with a chance of snow down to around 3500 ft in the Mt Baker area toward the end of the day.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
