Through the weekend, the Cascade Crest will create a sharp divide between clouds and light snowfall to the west and partial sunshine mixed with a few snow flurries to the east. NW flow around an E Pacific high pressure maintains an increase from primarily light to primarily moderate W ridgeline winds. The rains of a front over southern Washington drop into the Mt. Hood area overnight. Expect a trace to half an inch of snowfall with its remaining moisture. A very weak convergence may bring some light snow (up to an inch of accumulation) near Barlow or Stevens Pass. An approaching disturbance shifts very light snowfall to areas north of I-90 overnight. Light snowfall increases and spreads throughout the west slopes of the Cascades on Saturday, peaking in the mid-day hours and tapering to flurries Saturday night. This should be a 1-4” event for most areas but 6” may be possible in convergence. A moisture plume rounding the offshore high begins to move into northern Washington on Sunday. Models diverge significantly regarding how quickly the snowfall ramps up during the day. At this time, expect primarily light snowfall in the morning from Smoqualmie Pass northward. Moderate snow develops in the afternoon with some snow expanding south to the Mt. Rainier area. The offshore high brings significant warming to the Olympics by the afternoon, but warming should be more limited for the Cascades with snow levels rising to 2000-2500 ft by the afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The moisture feed increases Sunday night and Monday with moderate rain and snow becoming heavy and increasingly spilling over to the east slopes of the Cascades as snow levels rise to 3000-4000 ft. Precipitation and snow levels peak Monday evening before a cold open trough brings modified arctic air southward across our region. Snow levels drop to around 1000-1500 ft on Tuesday. Expect 1-3 ft snow totals for much of the Cascades through Tuesday.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
