Weather Synopsis

It's been a pretty quiet day in the mountains with relatively mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine away from the foggy Passes. Strong and gusty southeasterly winds have once again returned to areas near the crest from Snoqualmie Pass to Mt Hood. This evening wind speeds should generally decrease as we settle in for our last peaceful night before a major winter storm. Look for mostly clear skies with the possibility of some low clouds and valley fog near the Cascade gaps and eastside valleys. Further south a few stray showers could bring brief periods of rain and snow to Mt Hood, Mt St Helens, and Mt Adams.

On Wednesday, many locations should start the day with some blue sky. However, an approaching winter storm will quickly put an end to the nice weather. Moderate to strong SE-S winds out ahead of the weather system will be the first signs of the changes to come. By mid-day or early afternoon approaching clouds will start to thicken and lower. While most of the precipitation should hold off until the evening, a few showers could wander into the Olympics, south Cascades, and Mt Hood areas.

The storm finally arrives Wednesday night and spreads rain, snow, and strong and gusty winds from SW to NE across our region. By the time the sun comes up Thursday, the storm will be in full force. The southerly flow with this event should favor the Olympics, Mt Baker, Crystal Mt, and Paradise. Expect periods of heavy precipitation in these locations. Warming temperatures will cause snow levels to steadily march up the mountainsides and bring rain to near or above 6000-7000 ft for most locations by the afternoon. While easterly flow should help delay the transition from snow to rain at the Passe, there doesn't appear to be a sufficient cold air pool east of crest to hold off the warmer airmass.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The storm continues as we head into Thursday night and Friday. A deepening trough offshore continues to eject shortwave systems and bring additional rounds of precipitation into the region. The exact timing of these subsequent fronts is difficult to nail down, and there is plenty of variability in the weather models. Right now it looks like we see bands of heavier precipitation traverse the mountains from S to North Friday and possibly Saturday morning. While temperatures during this time frame will cool, snow levels will remain relatively high and likely stay above most trailhead locations.

Previous forecast from Jan 10, 2023

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
