Weather Synopsis

While light rain/snow shower activity winds down from a departed frontal system Thursday evening, a second stronger occluded frontal system moves into the coastal waters. Winds turn southerly in advance of the system. The occluded frontal system moves onshore from SW to NE overnight, rotating around a parent low off the northern tip of Vancouver Island. A 3-6 hour band of moderate rain and snow will be accompanied by a period of southerly winds and a brief warm-up before winds turn more westerly behind the front and initiate a cooling trend. Easterly flow as the front lifts northward should instigate period of significant snow accumulation on the east slopes of the Cascades from Mt. Hood to just south of Washington Pass. These areas could pick up a quick 6-10" of snow. By mid-morning, the precipitation band should already have passed, but post-frontal showers continue with shower activity heaviest for Mt. Baker and the northern Mountain loop where convergence bands will be active. A dry slot within the storm system may limit mountain-induced precipitation amounts slightly for southern Washington during the day on Friday, but there remains a significant spread in daytime precipitation amounts for Paradise.

Gradually decreasing light snow shower activity continues to focus on the west slopes of the Washington Cascades Friday night and Saturday. Expect increasing chances of sunshine during the day Saturday for the east slopes and southern portions of the Cascades.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Saturday night, an offshore high begins to move into the region, but trapped low-level moisture could keep some clouds and snow shower activity around. Expect mostly dry and sunny weather with light winds and seasonable temperatures Sunday through Sunday night. Easterly winds increase on Monday as the high shifts eastward and a weak and potentially splitting system moves into the coastal waters.

Previous forecast from Dec 29, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
