Weather Synopsis

Wow, what a nice and generally sunny day across the Pacific Northwest! A high-pressure ridge should keep us warm and dry through at least Sunday afternoon. Overnight, mostly clear skies and light winds will allow temperature inversions to form in many of the mountain valleys and passes. So, while some trailhead elevations dip below freezing, mid-mountain sites could stay noticeably warmer. Patchy fog may form near a few rivers and lakes but doesn't look common going into Sunday morning.

After a chilly start to the day, expect conditions to quickly warm. Many sites could easily see temperatures in the upper 40s or even 50 degrees. A few passing high clouds likely won't be enough to really curb the influence of the strong April sun. As a result, Sunday looks like another beautiful day in the mountains. By late afternoon, clouds will start to increase for locations like the Olympics and North Cascades. These clouds herald the approach of our next storm that will start to spread precipitation into the mountains overnight. 

A well-developed low-pressure system will impact the region Sunday night and into Monday. While most of the moisture pushes into Canada, sites north of Hwy 2 could see a descent pulse of precipitation. For areas further south and east, this storm will primarily bring cloudy skies, increasing winds, and just a few showers. Due to the recent warm weather, most locations will start as rain. However, a trailing cold front will bring snow levels down slowly on Monday helping return snow to at least some of our mountain locations.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The low-pressure system seems to stall off the coast of British Columbia Monday and lose steam. Instead of pushing inland, it just sits and spins additional short-wave systems into the Northwest. Organized rounds of precipitation appear to arrive Tuesday and Wednesday in the region. This time, colder temperatures should help these storms mainly produce snow in the mountains. While there's still plenty of uncertainty with these subtle waves of precipitation, we seem to be in for an active pattern through at least the mid part of the week.

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
